Signal Integrity: Why We Reject Silicone & Oil

In the world of retail skincare, texture is often treated as more important than efficacy. Most luxury brands rely on heavy silicones and oils to give their products a "silky" feel. While these ingredients make the product glide on smoothly, they create a terminal problem for high-performance peptides.

At The Nordic Altar, we prioritize Signal Integrity over cosmetic elegance. Here is why we choose aqueous (water-based) vehicles for almost every artifact in our catalog.

The "SNARE" of Silicones

Peptides are water-soluble signaling molecules. To do their job, they must travel from the surface of your skin down to the dermal-epidermal junction. Silicones and heavy oils act like a physical saran-wrap over your skin. They create an occlusive layer that is designed to sit on top of the barrier. When peptides are suspended in these heavy materials, they become trapped. The signal never reaches the target tissue, and the active ingredient is eventually washed away without ever being inducted.

The Aqueous Conduit

By maintaining a strictly aqueous environment, we preserve the ionic charge and stability of our copper and neuro-inhibiting peptides. Water acts as the perfect conduit, allowing the peptides to flow freely into the skin's slipstream. To ensure these signals can penetrate the skin's natural barrier, we don't use heavy oils—we use Ethoxydiglycol, a high-purity penetration enhancer that safely and temporarily lowers the resistance of the skin, driving our 3% concentrations deep into the recovery zone.

When Oil is Necessary

We only utilize oils and ceramides in our heavy-duty recovery artifacts like Aegis and Northern Reach. In these specific cases, the goal is to repair a torn barrier. Even then, we use a unique high-shear process to ensure the peptides are still delivered in a fluid phase that won't clog the delivery system or the skin.

The Result

When you use an Altar artifact, you may notice it feels "watery" or "thin" compared to retail creams. This is intentional. It is the feeling of a clinical signal being delivered without the interference of decorative fillers.
