Skincare is often marketed as a collection of "magical" ingredients. At The Nordic Altar, we view it as a series of precise chemical reactions. One of the most important variables in these reactions is pH—the measure of how acidic or alkaline a formula is. To ensure our artifacts function at maximum potency, we maintain a strict stability range of 5.5 to 6.5.
The Vulnerability of Copper
Copper Peptides (Copper Tripeptide-1 (GHK-Cu) and Copper Tripeptide-3 (AHK-Cu)) are highly sensitive biological complexes. They are stable and effective in a "neutral-leaning" environment that mimics the skin's natural pH. However, when these peptides are exposed to highly acidic environments (pH 4.0 or lower), a catastrophic chemical shift occurs.
Strong acids—such as high-strength Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid), Glycolic Acid, or Salicylic Acid—can break the chemical bond between the GHK peptide and the Copper ion. This causes the copper to "drop out" of the solution. Not only does the peptide become useless, but the free copper can actually become a pro-oxidant, causing the very skin damage you are trying to repair.
The Acid Conflict
If you use low-pH acids in your ritual, you must never layer them directly with your Copper Peptides. Doing so will neutralize both products. To maintain Signal Purity, you must separate these signals by at least 30 minutes, or better yet, use your acids in the morning and your Altar peptides at night.
The Alkaline Danger
Similarly, highly alkaline products (like traditional bar soaps or harsh cleansers) can push the skin's pH too high, causing the peptides to denature and lose their instruction set. This is why we always recommend cleansing with a gentle, pH-balanced aqueous cleanser before beginning your Altar ritual.
